Baie-Mahault is the first town in Basse-Terre to be reached by road and is bordered by the Rivière Salée, which separates the islands of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre. It faces the Grand Cul-de-sac marin nature reserve to the north, and the Petit Cul-de-sac marin bay to the south, home to the islets Feuille, Chasse, Boissard and à Cochons.
