São Miguel: The Must-Do Activities

São Miguel: What to do when you get there?

While in the Azores most probably you will visit the biggest island of the achripelago,São Miguel. It's size? 62.1 km in length and 15.8 km in width. São Miguel is the largest island in population as well counting more than 140.000 inhabitants in its land. The closest island to São Miguel is Santa Maria at the south, only 81 km away. The two islands are on the eastern part of the Azores.

As the biggest island of the Azores and the most populated one, there are many activities to do while in the island. From canyoning and jeep safaris, to whale watching and swimming with dolphins. São Miguel is a true paradise for outdoor activities lovers!

Paragliding flights are a unique way to benefit from a breathtaking view over "the Green Island".

If you prefer to explore the underworld, you can go to Gruta do Carvão. It is an ancient lava tube located near the municipality of Ponta Delgada.

The geological formations of São Miguel Island are ideal to practice rock climbing. If you have never experienced the thrill of this activity, this is definitely where you have to be.

If you wish to observe rare birds, the best spot is at Serra da Tronqueira. Here lives the Azores bullfinch, one of the rarest bird species in Europe.

Whether it is on the land or on the water, São Miguel offers a plethora of outdoor activities for every taste !

We had so much fun and saw the dolphins up close as they were catching a fish swarm. The marine biologist on board was amazing an we felt like we did not disturb the dolphins too much. Totally recommended!

We were almost all beginners and the coaches were so attentive and taking into account the needs of every person in the group. Our daughter was a afraid of the waves and they helped her find her courage and self-belief to make this also for her a great experience. Tx Constantino & Leonardo!

You learn about the origin, history and biodiversity of the islet and then you enjoy the waters while you snorkel with a guide.

This was a great course! We took one beginner lesson and it was great fun, definitely learned a lot.
This was very fun, the water was very choppy but the crew found an area that was more calm for us to have our snorkel experience. There were tons of fish and other aquatic life that the guides made sure to point out and inform us of. The wet suits fit perfectly and kept us warm while snorkeling.
