Practical information
One of the three most powerful descents in the mainland, the Cares River is suitable for adventurous beginners and confident swimmers. A category III-IV section, it is only navigable at certain times of the year depending on water levels and weather. Please refer to the river classification below.
Class III: Rapids with moderate, irregular waves, tight passages, strong eddies and current effects.
Class IV: Intense, powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water.
Meet your rafting team at the activity base in Arriondas for this whitewater rafting excursion in Picos de Europa National Park. Considered one of the wildest rivers in the area, your instructor will walk you through the paddle techniques, commands, and safety features of the tour before you set off on a shuttle to the embankment area. Suitable for adventurous beginners, this half-day rafting adventure is designed to test your teamwork on a two-hour trip down a category III-IV section of the river.
Led by your in-boat guide, you will paddle together to avoid large obstructions, squeeze through narrow channels, tackle rapids and avoid swamping waves – getting totally drenched along the way. A rewarding decent that feels like a white-knuckle ride – it is one of the most exciting and challenging routes, ideal for whitewater junkies and regular paddlers. Once you have completed the section of the Cares, you will return back to the activity base in time for a hot shower and some light refreshments.
