Marcel Rémy climbs a 450m wall at the age of 94!
The performance is admirable and, more than that, mind-boggling. Marcel Rémy, born on 6 February 1923 (he is therefore 94 years old) achieved a real feat on 22 August. Accompanied by his sons Claude and Yves and friends, the Swiss climber climbed "Le Miroir d'Argentine", his favourite route. 450m, 12 pitches, 5b+, in short, no easy task, especially when you are so old.
But Marcel Rémy has climbing in his blood, and the nonagenarian had set himself the completely crazy challenge of climbing "Le Miroir d'Argentine" one last time, at almost 95 years of age. A challenge to himself and to time that would seem impossible, inaccessible to the average person, but Marcel Rémy is not just anyone. This Swiss citizen has already climbed the famous mountain wall more than 200 times, taking his sons with him since 1968.
"For Marcel, the Miroir represents the culmination of his life", confides Claude Rémy, who nevertheless considered the challenge far too difficult for his father, due to his age. To prepare him for such a challenge, Marcel Rémy's children subjected him to a demanding preparation programme: indoor climbing, short routes in the mountains, hiking, etc., a test that the 94-year-old climber passed with flying colours.
"The training was great to reassure him and us, but it didn't mean it was a done deal," adds Claude Rémy. "At the beginning, I thought there was only a 5 to 10% chanceof making it. At the top of his game, Marcel Rémy was able to overcome his family's doubts and hold on to his dream of taming the famous "Argentine Mirror" mountain wall one last time.
His determination paid off as the 94 year old Swiss, nicknamed by some the "papy-climber", reached his goal and climbed the 450m length of his beloved wall in the Vaud Alps.
A huge congratulations for this fantastic performance which commands respect and which completely blew us away!
A few days ago, a video of Marcel Rémy's victorious ascent was put online, images that make you feel good.... Marcel Rémy even had the luxury of descending in a tandem paraglider, and that's class...
