Discover the beautiful geological features of the Faroe Islands on this guided sightseeing tour to Sandoy from Tórshavn!
The sightseeing trip to Sandoy departs from Tórshavn, the capital city of the Faroe Islands located on the largest island - Streymoy. Sandoy is a large, flat island situated south of Streymoy. It is known for its sandy beaches and charming villages, such as Skálavík and Dalur.
Your adventure begins with pick-up from your chosen location in Tórshavn (please specify when booking). After boarding the bus and meeting your experienced guide, the sightseeing tour from Tórshavn begins! The journey begins north towards Havnardal, a scenic valley located on the outskirts of Tórshav. As you cross the bridge to Kirkjubøur, you'll enjoy mesmerising views of the nearby islands of Vágar, Koltur, Hestur, and Sandoy. Kirkjubøur is a historic village located on the southern tip of Streymoy.
The first stop of the tour is at Kirkjubø, an old cultural centre of the Faroe Islands. You'll take a stroll through the charming village and learn more about the historical events and legends that have connected Kirkjubø and Sandoy since the Middle Ages. Then, you'll travel through an 11-kilometre (6.8 mile)-long undersea tunnel, where you'll see several visual artworks by the famous Faroese artist, Edward Fuglø. The tunnel will lead you to the island of Sandoy, starting at the village of Skopun.
At only 9m2, Skopun is the smallest municipality in the Faroe Islands. It is home to a 7.42-metre (24.3 feet)-tall mailbox, which used to be the largest mailbox in the world. If the sky is clear, you'll be able to see the ferry port on Streymoy and Kirkjubø from this village. The sightseeing trip on Sandoy continues past Sandsvatn, the third-largest lake in the Faroe Islands, to a beautiful white sandy beach covered by dunes. This area is famous for its rare plants, insects, and wildlife, some of which are not found elsewhere on the Faroe Islands. Then, you'll carry on to the west side of the island, where you'll find a secluded and peaceful cove often occupied by seals.
Next, you'll visit Skarvanes, Sandoy's smallest village with only 10 residents. Depending on the weather and road conditions, you'll also visit the small village of Dalur. It lies in an isolated valley surrounded by high mountains, only accessible by a 5 km (3 mi) single-line road high up on the steep mountainside. The guide will then drive towards the village of Húsavík, passing by old, stone-built houses, ruins, and plots that date back to the Viking Age. Skálavík Village is the final stop on the tour, home to large fields, scattered houses, and a boarding school. Throughout your sightseeing trip in Sandoy, the knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights about the island's history, culture and traditions. A local lunch and drinks are also included. At the end of the day, you'll be driven back to your pick-up point in Tórshavn.
