Operating from the shores of Towan Beach - rated as one of the best beaches in Cornwall, this popular surf spot in Newquay is neighboured by Fistral Beach, the annual location for the Boardmasters Festival. Considered the original home of the UK surf scene, Newquay is a popular summer destination on the North coast of Cornwall - with the consistent beach breaks and shallow water perfect for beginners. Only an hour flight from central London to the area's domestic airport, sandy Fistral and Watergate Bay beaches are exposed to the Atlantic Ocean that can create strong surf - seen during the World Surf League's Quiksilver & Roxy Open in August.
Activity
A two-hour bodyboarding taster lesson on Towan Beach, meet your instructor at the activity centre and head out for a comprehensive introduction to bodyboarding! Rental and wetsuits are included in the price, so all you have to do is turn up and join your group on the sand - where you'll do a quick warm and listen to a safety briefing. After finding out what those fins are for and how to secure your leash, you'll head into the foam for your first experience of bodyboarding - catching whitewater and even progressing to green waves out back ... if you think you're brave enough! Perfect for children and big kids alike, learn the basics or board handling and wave trimming as you improve your technique and water confidence in one lesson.
Conditions
Surfing lessons are organised according to the tide - with the most favourable season running from May until September when sea temperatures reach 17°C. Towan Beach is a sheltered beach break on the Atlantic that has fairly consistent surf and can work at any time of the year - Don't forget to check out Boardmasters Festival in August when the waves are at their best, who knows - you could be sharing the line up with a WSL pro!
