Shark cage diving in Gansbaai (2.5 hrs from Cape Town), is done in a narrow channel called Shark Alley, which is the open stretch of water between Dyer Island and nearby Geyser rock.
HOW IT WORKS
Each participant gets to spend 20 minutes in the structurally engineered cage, which remains partially above the water and secured to the side of the boat. From there you are able to witness these graceful creatures as they interact with their natural surroundings in their natural environment. You will get to see these amazing sharks from the safety and security of the cage.
IS DIVING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY?
No diving experience is necessary to cage dive, a rudimentary understanding of swimming is required if you are to get into the cage. There is no scuba offered, but you may request a snorkel or you dive using a breath-hold.
IS IT HARMFUL TO THE SHARKS?
The shark’s safety is of the utmost importance, and this time spent with the guests is used to educate and instill a love and respect of sharks of all kinds. A portion of your booking fee goes towards the institution for shark protection and study. It is African Shark Eco-Charters' fight to have sharks and their environment protected.
Please note that this activity is available from October to end of January! For the rest of the year, the shark diving is performed in Simon's Town!
