Portugal's highest mountain is located in the volcanic archipelago of the Azores, on the island of Pico, the second largest after the capital São Miguel. It is Pico Mountain, a 2 351-metre-high volcano: the highest volcano in the Azores and the third largest in the North Atlantic.
Inactive since 1718, it is now possible to climb Pico Mountain. It is an 8-kilometre route with a 1,100-metre climb of medium difficulty, for which you don't need to be a mountaineering expert, but you do need to be a bit of a sportsman. The instructors of Hominis Natura will guide you on this 8-hour ascent and will provide you with hiking poles and access to the Pico Mountain Nature Reserve. The route starts at Casa da Montanha, at an altitude of 1230 metres, surrounded by a green and lush landscape. Little by little you will go up and perceive the total change of scenery. At lunchtime, you will reach Piquinho: the summit, from where you will be able to see all the islands of the central group. After having rested and recovered your strength, it will be time to start the descent and return to the base.
