Discover the Douro National Park with this hiking route of the Mills of Miranda do Douro.
Two hours from Porto and on the border with Zamora, lies the Douro National Park, a 122-kilometre natural park that stretches through the towns of Miranda do Douro, Mogadouro, Freixo de Espada à Cinta and Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. As it passes through the park, the Douro River has created imposing steep cliffs, home to some endangered bird species such as the Egyptian vulture or britango. In the park there are a variety of hiking routes to discover it, such as the Los Molinos route.
The Mills route is a 20-kilometre hiking excursion that starts in Miranda do Douro and goes through the villages of Vale de Águia, Aldeia Nova and Pena Branca passing by some of the most important monuments in the park such as the Castro de Vale de Águia, the hamlet and church of Aldeia Nova or the mills on the banks of the Carrascosa and Fresno rivers. A 4-hour cultural excursion and a little bit sportive because of its unevenness, that will make you discover the most unknown and wild side of Portugal.
