Located in the Reykjanesfólkvangur nature reserve, Leiðarendi cave is a great place to discover caving near Reykjavík. A total of 900 metres of lava tunnels await you beneath the Tvibollahraun lava field formed more than 2,000 years ago: a truly historic site whose evolution will be explained to you by your specialist guide!

With its red walls in places, astonishing lava formations and, sometimes even in winter, natural ice sculptures, Leiðarendi cave is an unforgettable spectacle worthy of Iceland's most beautiful sites. Accessible to anyone aged 12 or over, this caving excursion through the lava tunnels of Leiðarendi will take you underground, where the only light will come from your headlamps. Be prepared to bend over, and even crawl from time to time, to fully discover these lava tunnels near Reykjavík!

Led by a guide who will be delighted to share his knowledge of Iceland's lava tunnels, you will enjoy an unforgettable underground adventure on this caving trip in the Leiðarendi cave, at the foot of the Bláfjöll blue mountains!

Practical information

Course of events

- Pick-up at your accommodation in Reykjavík or go directly to the meeting point given by the guide (please contact the guide once your booking has been confirmed to arrange this)

- Drive to Leiðarendi cave (approx. 25-30 minutes)

- Distribution of helmets and headlamps, followed by a briefing on the activity and safety instructions

- Approach walk of 150 metres

- Entry to the cave and caving excursion (30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the group)

- Exit the cave and return to Reykjavík (approx. 25-30 minutes)

Activity requirements

A minimum number of 2 participants is required for this activity to take place.

The cave is a cold and wet place: please dress warmly and wear waterproof outerwear to protect yourself fully during the excursion.

Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Special terms

Once your booking has been confirmed, please contact the instructor to plan the pick-up time and place for your activity. From March to October, pick-ups are between 7.45 a.m. and 8.15 a.m., while from November to February they are between 8.45 a.m. and 9.15 a.m.

You can rent a GoPro on site for an additional 6,900 kr ISK: you will receive the SD card at the end of the activity.
