Embark on a day-long excursion into the mountain chain of Kerlingarfjöll in Iceland's highlands: drive through exclusive highland routes, hike up the copper dunes, and bathe in steamy geothermal pools!
Kerlingarfjöll highland is as worth the visit as it is tricky to access. In this activity, we will use our insider knowledge of the terrain to drive you into the nature reserve. Thanks to our 4*4 Jeep, we will navigate the gravelly roads through the 1000-year-old legendary mountain range. The rhyolite composition of these dunes creates the characteristic orange-red hue of this natural reserve. Combine this with the clouds of steam generated from the geothermal pools, and this is a sight you will never forget!
We will begin this visit from Akureyri, where we will take the scenic Kjolur route towards Kerlingarfjöll. Once there, we will park and enjoy a leisurely 1.5-hour hike up the mountains. We will see go through passes and ravines as we climb the copper-coloured slopes to the moss-green mountain-tops. The delightful kaleidoscope of colours here never fails to surprise! Finally, we will stop by the famous hot springs at Hveravellir, where we will bathe in the hot waters, surrounded on all sides by vibrant oranges, reds, and greens.
There will also be an opportunity to stop at the restaurant in Kerlingarfjöll for food and drinks along the route. Otherwise, there is also the possibility to bring a packed lunch. So get your hiking boots on and pack your swimsuits, and get ready to visit Kjolur in all its multicoloured splendour!
