Kalamata is a vibrant city located in the southwestern part of the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece. It is the capital and largest city of the Messinia region, bordered by the Ionian Sea to the west and the Messenian Gulf to the east. Marathopolis is a charming coastal town located in the Messinia region. It is known for its picturesque setting, with traditional whitewashed buildings, narrow streets, and a quaint fishing harbour.
The dive centre is located in the small town of Marathopolis. You will start by meeting your certified instructor here, where you will begin with theory. Using your smartphone, you’ll sign up for the PADI e-learning tool. Although this is not a scuba certification course, you'll learn all the steps it takes to be a PADI-certified diver. The guide will then go through a safety briefing and instructions for scuba diving. You will learn about all of the safety equipment, including a wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins, regulator, buoyancy control device, tank and weights. Then, you’ll travel to the dive site.
This is a private group excursion for a maximum of 4 participants, to ensure personalised attention from the instructor. The dive will occur in the centre’s home reef, known as Skalakia by the locals. This dive site is one of the best in the Messinia region, with crystal-clear waters, rocky reefs and an abundance of marine life. You’ll start in shallow waters, practising basic safety skills and learning how to swim with the fins and breathe underwater. When you feel comfortable, it’s time for your first scuba diving adventure!
You’ll dive in the rocky underwater reef, with a maximum depth of 6m (19ft), perfect for beginners. The amazing visibility of the Navarino Sea and the warm temperature make this an optimal location for scuba diving. As you explore the new world beneath the surface, you’ll swim with many vibrant Mediterranean sea creatures, including groupers, octopuses, Morey eels, nudibranchs, lionfish, cuttlefish, damsel fish, sea breams, gobies, bennies, crabs, lobsters, and spirographs! This area is also the second largest nesting site for the endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtles, which are often spotted while diving. After your sensational diving experience, you’ll return to the dive centre for a debriefing session. You’ll learn about equipment care and discuss your experience.
