Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece, located in the Attica region. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, with a recorded history spanning over 3,400 years. Meteora is a breathtaking rock formation located near the town of Kalambaka, approximately 350 kilometres (217 miles) from Athens. On this tour, you’ll enjoy a scenic drive from Athens to Meteora, with stops at other historic landmarks along the way.

The trip begins with pick-up from your accommodation or airport/cruise ship terminal in Athens (please specify your location upon booking). The experienced guide will collect you in a comfortable air-conditioned minivan. This is a private group tour, welcome to people of all ages. The guide will start driving from Athens through central Greece. The first stop will be at the battlefield of Thermopylae.

Thermopylae is a historic site located approximately 200 kilometres (124 miles) northwest of Athens. The name "Thermopylae" translates to "Hot Gates" in Greek and refers to a narrow coastal pass between the mountains and the sea. The site has historical significance as during the 5th century BC, King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans fought here against Persian King Xerxes. After the short stop, you’ll continue driving through the plain of central Greece and pass by smaller towns such as Trikala and Karditsa, before reaching the modern town of Kalambaka.

You’ll arrive at Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you approach, you’ll have a breathtaking view of the perched grey vertical rocks, which appear to be suspended mid-air. These immense rock formations, some reaching heights of up to 400 meters (1,300 feet), are home to several Eastern Orthodox monasteries. These monasteries were built during the Byzantine era and feature beautiful architecture.

You’ll visit two of the monasteries atop the cliff and have time to capture some photos of the rock formation. After you have toured the monasteries, you’ll drive to the city of Kalambaka for an optional lunch. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, serving traditional Greek cuisine. After the meal, you’ll enjoy the scenic drive back through central Greece to your pick-up point in Athens.
