The Peloponnese is a large peninsula located in southern Greece, separated from the mainland by the Corinth Canal. Mount Parnon is a mountain range located in the Arcadia region, in the southeastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. The mountain range is characterised by its rugged terrain, deep valleys, and dense forests. It reaches an elevation of 1,935 metres (6,348 feet) at its highest peak.

The adventure begins at Paralio Astros, a picturesque coastal town located in the North Kynouria municipality of Arcadia. You’ll meet the experienced local mountain guides and go through a safety and itinerary briefing. The journey will commence at a traditional village nestled deep within the heart of Mount Parnon at an altitude of 450m (1,476ft). This hike is a little challenging, so it’s not recommended for complete beginners or those with health conditions. Once everyone is prepared, you’ll set off into the gorge!

As you hike, you may pass Mount Parnon’s abundance of flora and fauna, including oak and pine forests, as well as various species of wildlife such as deer, wild boar, and birds of prey. Soon you’ll arrive at the waterfalls of Lepida, tucked within the lush greenery of the mountain. The waterfalls are renowned for their natural beauty, with cascading streams of water flowing over rocky cliffs surrounded by thick vegetation. You’ll pause here to capture photos and take in the serene surroundings. The smell of herbs such as oregano and sage will fill the air as you listen to the sound of the enchanting waterfall.

The trip then continues on a different route back towards the starting point. The guide will use mountaineering and safety equipment for this leg of the journey. As you descend, you’ll have an amazing panoramic view of the gorge from above. As you hike, the guide can also share insights about the history of this mountain range. In Greek mythology, Mount Parnon was associated with the god Hermes, who was believed to have been born in a cave on the mountain. The trip ends back at the starting point.
